The sky was grey and overcast when they exited the car. It would rain soon and they wanted to avoid it... if they could. The group moved slowly and sadly up the hill, lead by a young man dressed in black. Following closely behind him was a young brunette, a red haired woman, and a blond woman.
As they reached the top of the hill... what they had come to see came into view...
/Yesterday the odds were stacked in favor of my expectations.
Flying above the rest
Never falling from the nest
Tuesday came and went and now I知 in a little situation
Maybe it痴 for the best
I can live alone I guess.../
The man waited as the women stepped forward and placed flowers on the grave before them. With tears in their eyes, they said their goodbyes... then stepped aside and left the man alone on the hill.
/Maybe I can stand alone
Maybe I知 strong as stone
Even though the bird has flown
Maybe she値l fly on home.../
He watched them step away and the leaned down to place a bouquet of roses on the grave... and with a loving hand, he reached out and traced the letters engraved into the tombstone... spelling out the name he would remember forever.
As he stood there, teardrops fell from his red eyes onto the stone, leaving damp trails down its surface as they trickled down and ran onto the ground. He shook his head, still not believing she was gone. She had lived through so much... only to die in a bush crash. It was so stupid... and it killed him inside.
If it wasn稚 for his friends, he would have joined her... but he had a family to take care of now and a reason to go on.
A small hand touched his shoulder and he turned to look up into the caring eyes and concerned face of the brunette.
"You coming?"
The man nodded.
"In a few minutes, Dawnie. I知 just saying goodbye."
Dawn nodded and walked down to join the others. The man watched her go and then turned back to the grave. He read the name again before he kissed his fingers and then gently touched the tombstone.
"I miss you, baby, but I知 going to be ok. I知 taking care of Dawn... and making sure she has a good life."
He paused as he began to cry again.
"I miss you so much, my love, and I will love you... forever."
He stood and smiled, taking one last look at the name... then he turned and walked away from the grave which read...
BUFFY ANNE HARRIS
Beloved daughter, sister, and wife
She saved the world... alot.
The man walked down the hill and hugged the women waiting. Dawn smiled and took his hand.
"Ready to go home... big brother?"
Xander smiled and nodded.
"Yes, Dawn... let痴 go home..."
The End
