Name: Liam Devlin O'Shaunnesgy Patrick Dillion O'Hara Paddywick McHale Thornton Danahure
Age: A little over 40,000 years
Age: March 17th, he's not quite sure what year
Origin:
Like his fellow Sunnydale-based Eternal, Robin Goodfellow, not much is known about Liam's history due to his great age and his reluctance to share it with others. His parents are both dead, although how and when is something Liam has never revealed. He was born and raised in the Leprechaun Glens, home to his people, connected by direct magical means to Ireland. Even at a young age, he was a troublemaker, which comes naturally to his people, but Liam stood out in particular. The King of the Leprechaun Glens at the time hoped that Liam might learn a little discipline by being forced to guard the King's secret stash of gold. Liam was patrolling when he saw a faery sneak out of the vault with a bag of gold. He gave chase, leading to an epic fight that went from the Glens to the Fairy Kingdom to Ireland and finally ended up with the two in a bar drinking themselves to a stupor. The argument of just who won the fight would become the basis for the deep friendship between Liam and Robin Goodfellow that has spanned millennia.
With Robin, Liam often traveled the world and other realms as well. While visiting Tir Na Nog, he caught the eye of a faery named Aideen. The two had a whirlwind courtship that ended with Aideen becoming the first Mrs. Liam Danahure. In a role he would fulfill many times over the centuries, Robin was the best man. Their marriage didn't last too long as Aideen recognized something: Liam had a wandering spirit within him that, despite his feelings, couldn't make him stay down too long with any one woman. Aideen accepted this and their marriage ended with the two remaining good friends.
Four thousand years ago, Robin, Liam, and Aideen came together for a common and important goal. The Oracles had predicted that by what equaled the year 2000 A.D. by the modern calendar, the Game played by Immortals would be won. This caused consternation amongst the Eternals as they realized that the winner of the Prize would be a god-like being rendered mad by the power he or she had. With the possibility of the higher Eternals deciding to wipe out all humanity in order to keep that from happening, Liam, Robin, and Aideen came together to forge a scroll stating that the game had been a joke gotten out of hand. This plan was reluctantly agreed to, although some Eternals enthusiastically endorsed the plan (the Gods Shiva and Mielikki being among them). Hiding the scroll in a temple in Tibet, the trio hoped that would safeguard humanity once it was found.
Throughout the centuries, Liam has met and become intimate with a vast array of women, several of whom have become his wives. Among the most prominent is Callieway Burton, an Irish seer who, despite knowing how each time will turn out, did marry Liam four times (because he's an amazingly unrelenting sex machine <Immortal Kombat>). Callie is one of the few people who has gotten close enough to Liam to understand him and still cares for him deeply. Liam's ex-wives range from human to alien and even a vampire named Megan Maguire in the early-twentieth century.
Of all his wives, the one closest to Liam's heart remains Kathleen Harris. In 1161, Liam happened upon a small village in Ireland and was immediately struck by a gorgeous young woman working at a local bar. He followed her to her home and saw she was neglected and abused by her parents who treated her as dirt. Liam came to Kathleen that night and offered to give her a better life. Kathleen was taken aback, but something about the odd stranger intrigued her and she agreed to go. She was more than a bit surprised when, in the blink of an eye, he'd taken her to the finest dress shop in Paris and, to her amazement, she could understand what the shopkeeper was saying.
It took all of a day for Kathleen to fall in love with Liam and not just because of his abilities; it was also because he obviously loved her as much. His good humor and charm helped and the two were wed a week later, Kathleen never looking back at her miserable home life.
For three years, Liam was the happiest he had ever been, actually feeling he could settle down with Kathleen. She understood he had responsibilities beyond the human realm and accepted his other-realm nature rather well, since in those days, people believed in the supernatural more easily than they do in modern times. She had only one condition: She made Liam swear, upon everything he held dear, that he would never use magic for her, under any circumstances. Kathleen had read some of the books Liam had and knew the dark forces that could be unleashed if he used his magic for the wrong reasons. She loved him too much to want to put him through that.
Their bliss ended tragically in 1164. A demon named Grinemac had been tearing around the countryside, massacring families and taking pleasure in it. Liam had gone on the hunt for the creature but while he was away, Grinemac attacked his home. When Liam returned, he found Kathleen horrendously brutalized and scarred, alive but in ceaseless agony. In pain, she reminded Liam of the promise he had made and that she loved him, no matter what. Knowing what she wanted, knowing there was only one way to end her suffering, Liam kissed his wife goodbye then broke her neck. He mourned her and buried her, with only Robin, Aideen and Callie at the funeral. Liam then went after Grinemac, brutalizing the demon before handing him to Hades to keep in eternal punishment.
Liam spent a decade hiding, traveling and lost in his grief. Robin finally tracked him down and made him realize it was time to move on with his life (Scooby Snacks: Best of All). Liam did, but was sure that he would never again feel the same way about any woman as he did about Kathleen.
In late 1998, Robin asked Liam for a special favor that involved delivering some news about someone (he mentioned something about the cousin of her current girlfriend). He agreed to do it once he found out his Christmas present was already on the way (the nature of which people are afraid to ask about). Liam made a quick, whirlwind trip somewhere else and received a bunch of letters to send to this "cousin," grumbling about being a glorified mailman.
A month later, Liam got word from Robin to meet him at Stonehenge. He was surprised to find that the rumors he'd been hearing were true and that Robin had been forced to live as a human by Oberon, to keep an eye on men he had empowered in California. Robin needed Liam's help to complete an empowerment for Larry Blaisdell, with Liam doing so (but not without some laughs at Robin's expense)(Scooby Gang Strikes Back).
In April of 1999, Liam was contacted by who he believed was Fin Varra, the ruler of Tir Na Nog. He wanted Liam to travel to Sunnydale to get hold of a mystic talisman that could be of interest to the witch Maeve and the rogue faery Mider. Hooking up with a Japanese professor, Liam traveled to Sunnydale and met up with Robin and the group he was hanging with, and immediately felt an attraction to the half-elven Shaw Hunter.
However, it turned out the entire thing was a complex plot by the Emperor Shao Khan to take over Sunnydale and use it as his base to merge Earth with Outworld. Liam helped Robin, Amy Madison, Shaw Hunter, Joyce Summers, Fox Mulder, and Dana Scully escape just before Sunnydale was taken over. Traveling to Ireland, they saw Callie for information on Kahn's plans. It was here that Callie dropped hints as to what they could do to end the invasion, also mentioning that there could be a future relationship between Liam and Shaw, something that didn't go over well with the latter.
Traveling to a nearby town, Liam and Robin met up with Aideen, now living as a human with the Immortal Torc. It was Torc who suggested they reunite the Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog, a quartet of Immortal warriors trained by Torc. The group was enhanced by a quartet who had experience with Outworld: Mortal Kombat champion Liu Kang, movie actor Johnny Cage, special forces commandos Sonya Blade (and her partner, Jackson Briggs), and the ninja Sub-Zero. Theirjourney took them to the Faery Kingdom in order to get the Mystic Weapons the Knights needed. Stymied by Oberon's refusal to hand them over, Robin was enraged to discover that Oberon had cut a deal with Kahn. He chose to invoke a challenge for sacred combat for the weapons, with Liam, Aideen, and Shaw joining in. It was a hard fought victory, but it turned out to be Phyrric as Maeve managed to kidnap Amy, Mulder, and Scully in order to complete the sacrifice needed for the merger to begin.
During the travels and battles, Liam had made it known he was interested in Shaw but she rebuked his advances at every turn. He took her to Kathleen's grave to let her know he had known loss and that he promised to save those she cared for. In an attempt to get him to understand her, Shaw let Liam read her mind, allowing Liam to see the pain Shaw had seen in her life and feeling more concerned for her as a result. On Robin's encouragement, Liam got Angus McAllister, the king of the Leprechaun Glens, to come to Oberon's court as Robin attempted to raise a force to fight Kahn. Joyce Summers managed to convince the faeries to work together to attack Kahn.
During the battle, Liam worked with Shaw, needling her in order to keep her angry and more importantly, alert as she had been denying herself sleep. They ran Kahn's aide Shang Tsung off and allowed him to be killed by Shaw's goddess, Mielikki. In the end, Outworld was defeated and Liam decided to hang around Sunnydale to be back with Robin and be near Shaw, to see how Callie's visions played out (Immortal Kombat). In the aftermath, he and Robin were approached by Oberon and King Angus who forced the duo to take on a lower power level then they were used to in order to live among the mortals.
Liam has been living in Robin's apartment while planning to get a place of his own. He works with the gang in various ways while learning how to live with them. When Cordelia Chase lost her money after her mother and accountant wiped out the family earnings, Liam attempted to use magic to fix it. Robin informed him that they couldn't do that sort of thing (A Fighter's Worth). Although he's still learning, Liam is starting to fit in around Sunnydale and perhaps is growing on a certain half-elf.
Race: Leprechaun.
Description: Five foot five and weighing about 150 pounds but stronger than he looks (even with his powers decreased. He has a thin and wiry build, walking with an easy gait, a spring in his step. He's relatively handsome with a sharp nose and chin, a smile seemingly always on his face, green eyes, and an unruly mop of red hair hiding pointed ears (prefers a "natural" look for it but can comb if necessary) It can surprise some that when he does "dress up," he's remarkably immaculate. Not surprisingly, he prefers green colors with some brown mixed in here and there. He usually wears brown pants and a green tunic but has learned how to "adapt" to human clothing, although sticking with his unique dress code. Most importantly is his overall attitude and aura as he always appears to be laughing at something.
Abilities: Normally roughly a level 13 on the power scale, now forced to scale back to 7 or 8. Wide range of magical abilities but unable to "cut loose" unless against a true and viable threat to the mortal realm. Can use small bursts of magic but is being cautioned by Robin not to rely on them too much. Although difficult, Liam is learning to rely more on his wits than his magic. He is fluent in all languages (being telepathic helps), and can translate a variety of texts that most scholars can barely understand. His long memory can be beneficial as well, as he's forgotten spells and facts that even high-level mages don't know existed. Good hand to hand fighter, even if he does favor a more brawling fisticuffs style and capable of using various weapons, but prefers a hands-on approach.
Current status:Living in Sunnydale with Robin but looking for a place of his own. Gets along well with the majority of the gang, especially Xander. He still has hopes for himself and Shaw and despite herself, she feels a sense of attraction toward Liam as well (Working Girl, Year To The Day, Blast For The Past). Whether they'll be able to match Callie's prediction about them is still up in the air.
Proficient weapons:As noted, prefers fists but is capable of using various hand weapons and even a gun if the occasion calls for it.
Current beliefs:Catholic leanings but not exactly a regular churchgoer, although he does show respect for priests. He of course has loyalty to the Leprechaun Glens and is learning to put trust and faith in Steve as the leader of the team. Like Robin, he hides the truth about the Scroll, wanting to safeguard a people he has grown to like. He would follow Robin into Hell and back if need be, trusting him more than anyone else he's known. He's growing to like the Sunnydale group (even the British Giles) and already wants to help them out as he can. Having seen the strength she showed against Outworld, he feels a great respect for Joyce Summers, putting her on a par with the rest of the Scoobies. And of course, he finds his attraction for Shaw growing. However, the love Liam still holds for Kathleen and her memory is holding him back a bit as he's afraid of disrespecting the spirit of the woman who meant more to him than anyone...even if it is for one who might mean just as much.
What is the most important thing you can say about this character?
When I was creating "Immortal Kombat," I realized that with the Irish influences, the introduction of a leprechaun was a great opportunity. It was inevitable that such a creature would enter into the Wandererverse and it hit me that having him be a long-time friend of Robin's made perfect sense. So, Liam was born, coming together in my mind much faster than I would have thought. I had decided two things almost immediately about him: One, that he would stay in Sunnydale, giving Robin someone to talk to who could truly understand someone of his power and non-human mentality. And second, he just might win the heart of Shaw, an idea I'm happy that Tim went along with.
Liam, I'll admit, is an exaggeration of my own Irish background. While he may seem like he's always joking, he does have a serious side and a philosophical bent. He's still learning to be among humans and at a lower power level than usual so he's not quite to the same level of acceptance that Robin is. While his multiple marriages may make him seem womanizing, Liam does care for every one of his wives, no matter what. That care extends to Shaw as he tries to figure out how deep his feelings for her run. He can show arrogance, natural due to his powers and his Irish makeup but doesn't flaunt it too much. He doesn't consider himself superior to the others but rather just a bit different. He does care for humans and wants to keep them safe. He has a healthy respect for Steve and others in leadership position and is capable of some surprising leadership abilities himself. Most of all, Liam is a good balance to Robin, good friends who, while having some differences, still work well to help those they believe are deserving of their aid. And like his old friend, if Liam sees those he cares for in trouble, then head there's going to be hell to pay. Because pissing off an Irishman is one thing. Pissing off one who's several thousand years old and packed with magical power...head for the hills.
